List of enlightened people and masters
Here you'll find the list of enlightened people. Listed are both, enlightened people who already died, and enlightened people who are still alive. The term “enlightenment” is equaled here with the term “awakening” or “realization”. I am aware that there is a difference between an “enlightened” and an “awakened” person. The level of realization of the enlightened person is not taken into account. Everyone, who through his public statement believably documents being most of the time without an “I”, is introduced in this list as an enlightened person.
| Why? |
We only mention enlightened people who are publicly teaching. At the present moment (2020) it is assumed that there are between 20 and 30'000 living enlightened people on the planet.

Enlightened people

Born in Germany in 1948. He has been living for a long time in England and is now living in Canada. He is probably the most known living enlightened person in the world. He reached world fame with his book “The Power of Now” that became a New York Times bestseller after his appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Eckhart Tolle is one of the few people who came to enlightenment without any previous contact with spirituality. One day, out of deepest depression Eckhart Tolle told himself: "I don't want to live with me any more". Suddenly the thought appeared: "Who is the I that I don't want to live with any more? Apparently there are two..." and enlightenment happened. After that he spent two years on park benches in London and enjoyed the peace that he perceived everywhere.

American. Had been living for a long time in India with Papaji. Gangaji got married after her enlightenment.
Gangaji’s husband. It is controversial to what an extend he is enlightened.
Osho †
World’s most known enlightened person from 70’s till 90’s of the past century. Born in 1931 in India, died in 1990. He became famous as the "Baghwan", who had his ashram in Poona (India) and attracted ten of thousands of Western and Indian followers, called sannyasin. In 1989 he changed his name to Osho. Osho was known for his Rolls Royce collection. He owned up to 90. He appeared sometimes in costumes that reminded one of extraterrestrials. Osho preached free love.

Redheaded German woman, who has been living in Poona, India since 1979. She practiced excessive meditation and came, after stays with Osho, Ponjaji and Gangaji to enlightenment. Her English sounds wooden and very German. She claims to have found a way to bring everyone to enlightenment, called "Intensive Satsang".
Good looking Australian. She had her first awakening with 16 while she was raped. In her death struggle she realized that the man raping her is pure love. From that moment on he refrained from her.

The “veteran” of enlightened people. In 1979, he became enlightened during his sleep. In the mid 90‘s he experienced another deep realization when he became one with all-there-is. He is the one who speaks the fastest and creates sensational word-caprioles. Besides holding Satasang’s and writing books, he has an ordinary profession: He is a painter.
Toyar is Israeli who in 1993 came to the Ashram of Osho where he melted with the spirit of Osho (Osho then didn't live any more). He then traveled through the Himalaya where, in December 1999, his experience of Awakening and One-ness happened. In 2000 he founded a spiritual village called "Pacha Mama" in Costa Rica.
After many years of searching and straying through Israel, Thailand, Japan, Nepal, Himalaya she experienced an awakening in India with Dolano. After that Unmani has been living for two years in Australia and New Zealand in a tent, a bus or on the beach. Back home in England, after a fight with a friend where he called her “arrogant”, a next realization happened. After this she realized that she was no longer separated from anything.

An enlightened American, who, after a long search, came 2009 to enlightenment in a period of three weeks. The breaking point happened while he has been looking for two hours at a frog in a forest. He has the courage to call himself "enlightened”. Wayne Wirs died on August 31, 2017
As much empty phrases are sold, as much ego is in the game.

The enlightened Dutchman, is one of the youngest of our time. Good looking, young, with always sleeked hair. He’s already been called the “Justin Bieber of the enlightened ones”. He has a constant smile upon his face.

Sai Baba †
1926 - 2011. Indian Guru, who is believed to be able to do miracles. Above all materializing. He practiced that over and over again in his events: suddenly objects would appear in his hands. He is considered as the super-man in India. More than 20 thousand people would come to his events. In his biography Isaac Tigrett, the founder of the “Hard Rock Cafe”, told a story how one night in America, he had a car accident and almost hemorrhaged, when all of a sudden a man appeared from the street, saved him and mysteriously disappeared without a trace. Years after this event, he accidentally saw a photo of Sai Baba and he recognized him. He bequeathed a big part of his fortune.

Jesus †
Palestinian itinerant preacher who lived from 3 BC - 31 AD. Beside Buddha, he is the one who caused the most waves in the history of mankind. It is speculated that more than half of the statements in the Bible are not said by him, but rather had been put into his mouth. Jesus apparently could perform so called "miracles". He died the martyr's death on the cross for his teachings. His message is the least understood message of all enlightened people. His succession organization made just a codex of behavior out of it. The companions surrounding him where drastically overestimated by his succession organization. Neither his mother Maria, nor the apostles nor Paul were enlightened. When Jesus speaks about "Kingdom of God" or "Kingdom of Heaven" he speaks about enlightenment. (“The Kingdom of God is within you")

Sufi, who lived from 857 - 922 in Persia and died in Baghdad. He is one of the most known enlightened people from Muslim tradition. He was put into a dungeon because of statements like "I am the absolute truth" or "There is nothing wrapped in my turban but God" or "me and God have become one" or "my only self is God to the point that I can not even remember my own name". After 11 years in the dungeon he finally went to trial. When they were taking him to court, a Sufi asked him: "What is love?" He answered: "You will see it today, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow." He was sentenced to a cruel death. He was hacked alive. While his hands, arms and legs were cut off he didn't stop repeating: "I am the truth" and he always smiled. His legs were cut off, he smiled and said, "I used to walk the earth with these legs, now there's only one step to heaven, cut that if you can." And when his hands were cut off he painted his face with his own blood, when asked why, he said: "I have lost a lot of blood, and I know my face has turned pale, I don't want you to think that it is out of fear".
Why is anybody teaching anyway?

American 1955 until 1997. The astounding thing happened to her: while waiting at a bus station in Paris, she all of a sudden lost her “I”, but she didn’t know how to take that state, so she was helplessly sent from one psychiatrist to another. She suffered from states of tremendous anxiety because they tried to treat her state as something pathological. Only at the end of her life she realized that "enlightenment" had happened to her. She became famous through her book "Collision with the Infinite" that describes her life.
Buddha †
Born in India 563 BC died 483 BC. Died at the age of 80 years. He lived in the same era, like many Greek philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, Heraclitus and Pythagoras. Apart from Jesus, he is the one who has left the greatest effects through all time periods. "Buddha" is an honorary title (similar to "Christ") which means “The Awakened One”.
Buddha`s name was actually Siddhartha Gautama and he came from a Princely Family. At the age of 29 years, he left the family to find enlightenment. After years of experiments such as fasting, nude running, begging, meditation and trying out various methods of famous religious teacher, at the age of 35 years he finally sat down under a Bodhi tree and swore not to get up until he was enlightened.
After several days of sitting motionless he finally became enlightened.
Buddha gathered monks around him, who carried on the teaching. Buddha himself believed that his teachings would last only about 500 years.
Since the near-death experience after a car accident in 1990 he became enlightened. He was able to maintain this state by the help of his teacher Gangaji.
Om Parkin has purchased the estate “Saunstorf in Mecklenburg”, he and his followers renovated it and created a center where his retreats and Darshans have been taking place since 2010. Parkin has English roots and speaks very good English.
Unusual are his long, interlaced and printable sentences in a phonetically impeccable High German that he speaks – a pronunciation that is commonly only used by experienced stage actors. He is famous for the pauses in the middle of his talks, which can last up to 30 to 50 seconds. He has a son, who was born in 2005/2006. After more than 30 years, Om C. Parkin has again joined the Catholic Church in August 2013.

Mario Mantese is one of the best-known living enlightened people in Switzerland. He previously played bass in the internationally successful soul group Heatwave.
After a gala evening in London 1978, he took a drug coctail and became very aggressive. Back home he demolished the apartment and told his then grilfriend "I will kill you" - to protect herself she hold a knife in front of her. In the fight the knife went in his heart. (Full story here Mario Mantese) Waking up from a coma in which he was wandering through the afterlife, he realized that he was enlightened. Although unable to walk and his articulation affected, Mario Mantese (also called master M) has frequently over 1800 visitors at once at meetings held in Switzerland. Mantese has the reputation for performing true miracles. In his books he reported in addition to healing also about being present in several places or that he has commanded the clouds in a thunderstorm to create a rain-free corridor in which he and his companions went home without getting their feet wet. There are reports that he opened car doors without a key or commanded retractable barriers to rise. In a report he describes where he appears a woman, flooded in light and three times his body sizes.
Most people see enlightned people as solid ground at some point. In reality enlightened people are in search like everybody else.

Ram Dass †
USA. Born in 1931, died in December 2019. He worked for 5 years (1958-1963) as a Harvard professor and then experimented with mind-altering drugs such as LSD. He founded several projects, including a spiritual aid project for prisoners. His enlightened status is uncertain and there is no awakening experience reported. Ram Dass was partially paralyzed by a stroke since 1997.
Enlightened people
British. He was a pupil from Tony Parsons. He wrote a book “I hope you will die soon”. Before he became enlightened, he was a psychiatrist.
The enlightened cult figure. He was born 1879 and died in 1950. He became enlightened already at the age of 16, while he was thinking about his death asking: “Who dies”? Basically all todays living enlightened people recognize him as one of the most realized people. Ramana died of cancer.
Lived from 1897 to 1981. Enlightened Indian, who became a “magnet” to western ”searchers” after Maurice Frydman published his book in 1937. He became enlightened after constantly repeating the words “I am”.
Born in the USA, now living in Frankfurt. He is one of the most known enlightened people in Germany. He is holding multi-day Satsangs always in different cities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland that are broadcasted live online. There are always some 550 people participating online. He only speaks American English that is always, sentence by sentence, simultaneously translated to German language. He says that his body “needs meat”.
Born in June 1927, died September 2012. US American who worked successfully as a psychologist. After his awakening David Hawkins has been completely withdrawing from public into solitude for 7 years. After that, he had to learn interpersonal behavior again in order to be able to "interact normally" with people. He became famous with his method of muscle testing, with which one can measure the consciousness of a person or a teaching. Thus the consciousness is attributed to a number between 1 and 1000 and according to which enlightenment begins at 600.
He is held as enlightened, but from my point of view is not. He himself says that only during his seminars he acts out of "Emptiness" – otherwise not. He is famous for these therapeutical, healing sessions where people uncontrollably fall into a trance because of his energy. Barnett, born in 1930, is married and has two (young) children.
Papaji †
Indian enlightened, lived from 1910 until 1997, who was Ramana Maharshi’s disciple. After Osho’s death Papji became the pilgrimage site of a lot of seekers who are now enlightened. Gangaji, Om Parkin, Muni, Mooji, Samarpan, Dolano... and a lot of others.

French Enlightened, who had a scientific career ahead of him, but gave it up because of his search for enlightenment. He had the first awakening experience while reading a book of Jiddu Krishnamurti. Then, two years later, he was meditating at home with two friends; suddenly the two began to sing songs in Sanskrit. This triggered a second, deeper awakening where he lost his “ego” forever. Francis Lucille speaks good English.

Raphael is German. He lives secluded in a hermitage in northern Italy and is no longer teaching satang’s. In his books, he expresses himself very cryptic and uses the spiritually correct Sanskrit vocabulary, because he is closely committed to the ancient Indian teachings. His books are not easy to understand, maybe only for those who are already enlightened. For seeker it's rather confusing and not very clarifying. He doesn`t want any photo existing of himself.
When he was only 18 he already had his first moment of awakening, but it was only temporarily. Then in November 2004 during Sarmapan’s Satsang he had his second, deeper awakening experience. Sarmapan told him that this state will prevail, but he was wrong about it. (It didn't prevail. From this time on Muni experienced a continuously deepening realization. It is not certain if there was a third sudden event of awakening or if there was the exceptional phenomena of a smooth transition to it). Almost each Wednesday, he is holding online-Satsangs where people can ask him questions. Usually there are at least 50 persons online.
Jiddu Krishnamurti †
1895 to 1986: He is an enlightened person for whom the theosophical organization "The Order of the Star" was founded in 1911, of which he was designated to be the spiritual leader. One of the people who expected the imminent reappearance of the World Teacher was Charles Webster Leadbeater, then an influential Theosophist and occultist. In 1909 he "discovered" Jiddu Krishnamurti, an adolescent Indian boy, who he proclaimed as the most suitable candidate for the "vehicle" of the World Teacher. Following his "discovery", Krishnamurti was taken under the wing of the Theosophical Society, and was extensively groomed in preparation for his expected mission. Krishnamurti dissolved the organization in 1929 with his famous speech, where he stated: "enlightenment cannot be organized, enlightenment is a pathless land".

English. He basically always gives the same answer to no matter what kind of question: “There is nobody...” He every now and then drinks wine during his meals.

Lived from 1260-1328. One can recognize from his texts that he was enlightened. Quote: “Man must leave all picturing and must leave his I and become very foreign to it, if he wants to become the son, in the heart of the father." Eckhart Tolle, before named Ulrich Tolle, took his name from Master Eckhart. The Heresy inquisition found Master Eckhart guilty. He died before he received the verdict.
Barbara Voedisch
She lives in Chiemgau, Germany. In her youth she was raped two times. She became enlightened after receiving the last information of her third channeled book, without previous contact to masters or spiritual books.
Zeno Eisenhut
Her role as a mother and wife was martyrdom. With help of Om Parkin she came to enlightenment. Zeno lives in Baden Baden.

Before her enlightenment, she lived in the hardest despair, self-accusation and depression. Besides Eckhart Tolle, she is one of the rare enlightened ones who, end of the 80's, from a dire mental condition became enlightened without any previous contact to spirituality. Nowadays she is best known for her book “Loving What Is” and her method “The Work”. This method is based on four questions that help you to recognize the cause of everything in yourself.
Controversial wisdom teacher from the USA. Allegedly, while being with Papaji, he confirmed him to be enlightened. But this can’t be confirmed from his videos or books. In 2013 he confessed publicly of not being enlightened and he stopped teaching for an indeterminate time.
Rania Blau
Relatively newly enlightened. Her first moment of awakening was in 2008. The last enlightening event happened in 2011. Exception among the enlightened ones. She dares to call herself enlightened. This is something very few have the courage to say.
Gabriele Rudolph
Enlightened person, who admits having "I-relapses". Before her awakening she lived several years in France at the ashram of the Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh, yet she left him disappointed. She had two awaking experiences, each with Satsang teacher Vanessa van Echten. The first time she detached from her ego and experienced a "falling in love" with everything. Later, back at the Satsang, Vanessa gave her a book, where she read on the first page the sentence: "There is no one having a choice," then she experienced the second awakening experience. She recognized "All is one" and there is only “That". Gabriele Rudolph lives in Hamburg.

Richard (Rick) Linchitz †
US American 1947 – 2013: He was a physician and passionate athlete, until he got a diagnosis of lung cancer. His success-oriented life plunged into a deep crisis. He could not continue to practice neither as a doctor, nor sports nor playing the caring family father. In his great despair, he threw himself with all his energy in the spiritual search for enlightenment. He attended countless spiritual teachers and visited spiritual and awakened masters in India. One day teacher Satyam Nadeen told him at a retreat in Costa Rica "Consciousness is all there is - and you are that" and he awoke. His body healed inexplicably. The cancer came back a few years later and he died on May 13, 2013.
Jeff Foster
Young British enlightened person. Born in 1980. As a student of astrophysics at Cambridge University, he became highly depressed, sick and wanted to kill himself several times. He locked himself in the house and read everything he could get on awakening and spirituality. In his deepest despair, he suddenly realized one day in his room that the chair is not a chair, but oneness dressed in chair and he became enlightened. Jeff Foster answers almost every question with the statement that nothing can be done, or that there is no one who can do something. He appears a bit boring with his findings. Foster is very popular and is an avid YouTube video creator.
Lisa Cairns
A very pretty British enlightened person, who had a near death experience at age of 6 years and has ever since been in search of the ultimate truth. In 2008 she lost her "ego" definitely.
Christian Meyer
German. After many years of spiritual search in 1998 he met his teacher Eli Jaxon-Bear (husband of Gangaji) and became enlightened. He sat down and experienced a deep fall which ended in a floating state. Christian Meyer is working as a professional psychotherapist, living in Berlin and intertwines many psychological concepts (Enneagram, Family constellation, NLP, hypnosis, Gestalt therapy) with his teaching.
Jed McKenna
US, Enlightened, who has written three spiritual books. In "Spiritual Enlightenment – The Damnedest Thing" he describes in a novelistic style, how he spent time from 1988-2000 with seekers in his house in Iowa. It is discussed in many Internet forums that this book is a fictional story. However, his teaching has a large radicalism and intransigency.
1917 - 2009. Ramesh Balsekar was born in Mumbai, but was brought up westerly. He made a career as a manager and was even the president of the Bank of India. After his retirement, led by his search for enlightenment, he came to Nisargadatta. After less than a year with Nisargadatta and translation work for him, Balsekar came to the “last insight" and shortly before his death was authorized by Nisargadatta to be a teacher.
French (born 1963), who suddenly experienced enlightenment without any previous contact to spirituality.
In contrast to Eckhart Tolle or Byron Katie she did not go through a valley of depression, worst self-accusation and suicidal thoughts. She was a normal woman, who, one day in the summer 2003, out of the blue, in her living room at home, stopped thinking - the silence came nevermore to return. Two months after this experience her only son died in a car accident and everyone around her thought she had been in a deep state of shock because they could not see any crying, collapse, or sorrow - but in truth she was inwardly unmoved by this death.
Yolande Duran uses no spiritual vocabulary and names the indescribable, the energy behind everything always only “this thing”. As one of the few enlightened she says that she experiences no anger any more. Her talks (Satsang) in French are always translated to English.
In my opion Yolande Duran is one of the most realized enlighetned ones in this day and age.

Wayne Liquorman
Enlightened since April 1989, in the presence of Ramesh Balsekar. He is a former alcoholic, cokain & drug addict and was a student of Ramesh Balsekar. His most famous book is called "The Way of Powerlessness". He tries in this book to unite the teachings of Advaita with the twelve steps of anonymous alcoholics. At first he did not want to teach in public, until Ramesh Balsekar asked him in 1996. He holds regular talks in his home in California, but also speaks in places scattered around the globe.

Robert Adams †
American master who lived from 1928 to 1997. He experienced his awakening at the youngest age ever reported. Robert was 14 years old when he was doing math at school.
He was unprepared, as he always knew, when he said "God, God, God" three times in a row, he was given the answer. This time he said again, "God, God, God," but instead of solving, he was awakened.
He moved to India at the age of 18 in the ashram of Ramana Maharshi, where he stayed for a long time. Adams suffered from Parkinson's disease at the end of his life.
He never published a book, only dialogues of him are recorded.
